factory profilProfil

XTAL Fibras Opticas S.A., a Brazilian company founded in 1983, started its optical fiber production process in 1984, based on the technology developed by the University of Campinas and the Research and Development Center of TELEBRAS. Since then XTAL’s technology has been completely developed internally on a continuing basis. XTAL’s fibers meet international requirements, according to International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standards and specifications.
Since 1984 XTAL has produced more than one million and a half kilometers of multimode and singlemode fibers which were applied in Telecommunication Networks, CATV, and Local Area Networks, in Brazil and abroad, e.g., Finland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, France, and Turkey.

XTAL is located in Campinas City, the Brazilian “Silicon Valley”, very close to Universities and several high tech Telecommunication and IT companies. The industrial site occupies a 20,000 m2 area, with more than 3000 m2 of built space, where 131 people work. XTAL is part of FiberCore, Inc., an U.S. holding XTAL optical fiber preforms are manufactured by XTAL’s Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) technology. XTAL also uses VAD preforms, which are manufactured by well-known certified international suppliers. All glass material of both processes is of synthetic origin, thus assuring product compatibility in the intrinsic material properties as well as the same splicing and mechanical properties for both fibers. MCVD stations are computer controlled and gas systemswith Helium proof leak test. High-grade eletropolished stainless steel ducts carry optical fiber grade chlorides and gases to the process region.
Preform drawing is conducted on state of the art equipments. To measure the fiber’s optical, geometrical and mechanical parameters are used equipments constructed and operated under ABNT, IEC, EIA, and ITU standard procedures.. The optical fiber manufacturing is conducted by certified operators and supported by a team highly specialized on process engineering, maintenance, production planning and inventory.
The annual production capacity of XTAL is about 800,000 km and its investment plans are addressing the production of 2.6 million kilometers by the year 2003.XTAL optical fiber preforms are manufactured by XTAL’s Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) technology. XTAL’s Quality System achieved its first ISO 9001 international certification in 1995. The last certification was issued on December 98 by BRT†V, which audits the system, its continuous improvements and adherence to the ISO standard procedures.Every XTAL fiber reel is tested, inspected, and measured according to internal requirements and special needs from its customers. All data, since the initial fabrication steps, till the final optical, geometrical and mechanical characteristics measurements are stored on a computer database, assuring complete traceability of characteristics, materials, equipments, manpower and procedures. This database is also used for statistical process control and other industrial and administrative applications.
